SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE

We are a parent-run group committed to promoting justice

Get involved!

The Social Action Committee exists to:

Create structures, organize events, and lead the parent community of PS261 to build relationships across difference so that we can support each other and the school more effectively and model for our children.

Respond to social and political needs in the community

Advocate and provide support for curriculum that addresses racial and social justice and involves and amplifies student voices

Living the PS 261 Mission

Connecting students and parents to meaningful change through community engagement.

SAC is borne out of the P.S. 261 Mission Statement, which begins: “Our mission is to create a school community that promotes cross-cultural relationships that value diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice across staff, families, and students.”

Social justice can only exist when injustice is corrected, and the way to do that is through social action. This committee connects our children to ways they can lend their voices to community uplift; it also connects us parents to ways we can lend our voices or our time to help bring the community together.

Relationships Build Community

Turning values into real impact for our school and beyond.

The 261 Mission goes on to say: “We believe that relationships are central to nurturing a sense of agency and intellectual engagement and are committed to building a school community that values all of its members and their ever-changing needs.”

Events that connect, engage, and strengthen our community.

Bringing Our School Together

We sponsor community events throughout the year.

Every year, we plan a day (or week) of service, creativity, learning, and reflection guided by the principles of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
